For the past 16 years, the European Archaeology Days (EADs) have invited the public to immerse themselves in the past and explore the traces left by societies since prehistoric times. For three days, over a thousand public events will be taking place throughout France and Europe, from excavation sites exceptionally open to the public to educational and fun activities, meetings with researchers, laboratory visits, exhibitions, screenings, and more.
A European dynamic
The protection, conservation and transmission of archaeological heritage is a major issue for Europe. At a time of cultural and economic crisis, archaeological work and its long-term approach can be a source of openness, tolerance and mutual understanding: a common good to be shared.
For several years, the EADs have continued to grow across Europe. European countries are mobilising widely to celebrate archaeology in all its forms. In 2024, 30 countries participated in the EADs, holding a record 2025 events. Walking in the footsteps of the past at the EADs is an opportunity to go beyond our borders to enjoy cultural and heritage sites all over Europe, and to meet researchers and stakeholders in archaeological heritage.
A Europe-wide event dedicated to archaeology can therefore contribute to the development of the notion of archaeological heritage, while promoting the cultural and historical diversity of each country.
