Humans and caves in prehistory

As part of the 2022 European Archeology Days, the Museo di Etnopreistoria "Alfonso Piciocchi” will be open to the public on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of June at the Castel dell’Ovo in Naples.

The museum is managed by the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) section of Naples upon concession of the Cultural Ministry. It is one of the few examples of a museum collection inside a section of the Italian CAI with more than 5.000 archeological, naturalistic and ethnographic artifacts from Italy and abroad. The findings are the results of speleological research conducted since 1958 by the CAI Naples speleological group showing the evolution of the technology used by humans since the Stone Age and the relationships between humans and the environment.

The visitor will be able to travel chronologically through historical periods from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age, with materials from Campania's important prehistoric caves such as Nardantuono Cave in Olevano sul Tusciano, Cannalonga, Ausino Cave, and Castelcivita Cave, to relive the more recent civilization.
