The Archaeology of Early Modern Valletta - The case of the Auberge d ’Auvergne high-status ceramics (17th and 18th century)

The National Museum of Archaeology holds a collection of fine tableware discovered during the demolition of the Auberge d’Auvergne in 1965. The collection consists mostly of early 17th Cent armorial plates in stile compendiario and 18th Century rococo maiolica. Archival research into cabrei, contracts of sale and wills resulted in the identification of the social milieu to which the fine maiolica belonged – namely high-ranking functionaries of the Order of St. John. The identification of the heraldry shown on the armorial plates also allowed us to explore some of the social mechanisms involved in the ownership of fine ceramics - including aspects of aristocratic banqueting and elite gift exchange.

Houses beyond the House – A residence, a home

Domus Romana

Malta

https://heritagemalta.mt/whats-on/houses-beyond-the-house-domvs-romana-tour/

The tour explores the Domvs Romana's function as an accommodation used by different people through various times in history.
Although, the site is well-known as a high-class residence, excavations carried out in 1920 uncovered the remains of numerous humbler Roman houses built along the road which show other social classes.
Later, in 1940, the Domvs served as a temporary home for a family who had moved from Tarxien due to the war. Anthony Spiteri spent the war years residing inside the Domvs while still working as a custodian for the then the Museums Department.
Join this tour, either in Maltese at 10.00am, or in English at 12.30pm, for an exclusive curatorial guided experience through one of Malta’s most popular ancient sites, along with a sneak peek into the current excavations.

Enjoy a magical evening at the Bistra Catacombs, with a glass of wine and refreshments at hand. Located halfway between the ancient town of Melite and the once-important harbour of Salina, Ta’ Bistra Catacombs are, so far, the largest set of tombs and catacombs which are accessible beyond the confines of the ancient city of the Island.
They were first recorded in the late 1800s but were only investigated in 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit, before part of the site was covered over by a new road leading down to Burmarrad. Further studies in 2004, 2013, and 2014, have brought the site back to life with new discoveries and hence, new interpretations.
